Brooklyn-based artist Mark Wagner talks to Avant-Garde diaries about the value of a dollar bill.

Meticulously breaking down each of its components, numbers, faces, lines, decorative swirls, the note becomes the basis of some of the most incredible collages you’ll ever see. Perfect, precise, often satirical scenes are created, whether it be a dour looking Obama or George Washington being chased by a dinosaur, Wagner makes clear that at the heart of his work is a desire to make us think about issues around American identity and its relationship to capitalism. In this short film he discusses the controversy that surrounds the destruction of currency for the sake of art and the meaning of what is “essentially just a piece of paper. Money and currency don’t actually exist in the the real world. They’re just something that we made up.” Press play.
